How to deposit cash into an online business account
Online business banks often have no teller. Where cash can go, what to ask about fees, and when a branch is the simpler fit.

Online business accounts are built for transfers, cards, and invoices. Cash is the awkward part, because there may be no teller. If your business takes cash every week, this is the question to answer before you apply, not after the first Saturday.
Three places cash can go
- A branch, if the provider is a bank with locations you can actually reach
- The provider's own ATM, if it accepts deposits
- A retail store in a deposit network the provider names on its site
If the provider never names a place to take cash, assume you cannot deposit it there until someone at that provider says otherwise, in writing on their site or in the account agreement. A forum post is not a deposit location.
Questions to ask before you apply
- Where, exactly, can I deposit cash?
- Is there a free amount each month, and what does the next deposit cost?
- Is there a daily or monthly cap?
- How long until the cash is available to spend or to pay a vendor?
- Does the store or the bank give me a receipt I can match to my books?
We will not print a dollar amount for a retail deposit fee until it is copied from a provider's own page. If our card is blank, that is the honest state of the research.
If cash is a weekly habit
A nearby branch is often the simpler fit, even if the app is plainer. An online account can still work if the deposit locations are close and the fee is one you can live with after you have read it. Compare the cash-heavy business set, then confirm the deposit rules on each provider's site. The SBA's account guide is the general case for opening the account in the first place (SBA).
Keep a record
Photograph or save the receipt and match it to the deposit in your books the same day. Cash that never hits the business account is easy to lose at tax time. The IRS recordkeeping page is the standard to aim at, and your tax preparer can tell you what they want on top of it (IRS).
Questions people ask
- Can every online business bank take cash?
- No. Many are built for transfers and cards. If the provider never names a branch, an ATM, or a retail deposit location, assume you cannot deposit cash until you ask.
- Is there a standard fee for depositing cash at a store?
- No fee we are willing to print. The amount, the daily cap, and how fast the cash is available are on that provider's schedule. Read it before you rely on the account.
- Should a cash-heavy shop use an online bank?
- Only if the deposit locations are close and the fee is one you can live with. A branch you can actually reach is often simpler.
- Do I need a receipt?
- Yes. Match it to the deposit in your books the same day. The IRS expects business records, and cash that never hits the account is easy to lose.
