Do freelancers need a business bank account?
A sole proprietor is not always required to open one. Here is why the SBA still says to separate the money.

A freelancer who works as a sole proprietor is not a corporation. A separate bank account is not automatically a legal requirement, and this page is not legal or tax advice. The practical reason most people open one is simpler: business money and personal money get mixed up fast, and untangling them in April is miserable.
What you are, legally
The Small Business Administration describes a sole proprietorship as a business you own by yourself, with no separate business entity (SBA: choose a business structure). You and the work are the same taxpayer. Opening a bank account does not create an LLC, does not change that tax treatment, and does not shield your personal assets if something goes wrong. If you need that shield, you need a different structure and a lawyer, not a debit card.
What the SBA still recommends
The SBA says to open a business account as soon as you start accepting or spending money as your business, so business funds stay separate from personal funds (SBA). That recommendation is about records and habit. It is the right default even when nobody is going to fine you for using a personal account for a freelance invoice.
A separate account helps you:
- See what the work actually earned
- Pay business costs without digging through groceries and rent
- Put a business name on the account a client pays
- Hand a bookkeeper a register that is not also your life
How to open it as a sole proprietor
Some providers let a sole proprietor apply with a Social Security number. Others ask for an EIN. You can get an EIN from the IRS without paying a third party (IRS). The document list is in what you need to open. The application steps are in how to open a business bank account.
If you form an LLC later, the sole-prop account does not automatically become the LLC's account. Plan on a new application. See business checking for LLCs. The review set for this situation is freelancer or sole proprietor.
Questions people ask
- Does the law require freelancers to have a business bank account?
- Not in every case. A sole proprietor is not a separate legal entity. Whether you must open a business account depends on the provider's rules and your situation. This page is not legal or tax advice.
- Why open one if it is not required?
- So business income and personal spending are not in the same register. The SBA recommends a business account as soon as you accept or spend money as the business.
- Will a business account cut my taxes?
- No. The account does not change how a sole proprietor is taxed. It makes the records cleaner for you and for a tax preparer.
- Can I apply with my Social Security number?
- Some providers allow it for a sole proprietor. Others want an EIN. The IRS issues an EIN for free.
