How to switch banks without missing a payment
Move direct deposit and automatic bills before you close the old account, so rent, pay, and subscriptions do not bounce.

The switch fails when the old account closes before the last payment has moved. Rent, a subscription, or a late paycheck hits a dead account, and you pay for the bounce. Keep both accounts open until the list below is actually done.
Before you open the new account
- List every automatic payment: rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, loan payments, subscriptions, and any company that pulls from the account and routing number.
- List every deposit: paychecks, government benefits, transfers from another person, and app payouts.
- Download statements you may need later. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's bank-account guide is a useful companion while you do this (CFPB).
- Read the old account's fee schedule for a closing fee or a balance you must keep until you close it. We do not guess that number.
If you are still choosing the new account, how to open a bank account online covers the application. No-fee checking is the review set if the monthly fee is what pushed you to switch.
After the new account is open
- Move direct deposit. Ask payroll or the benefits payer how many cycles the change takes. Watch for one deposit to actually post in the new account before you rely on it.
- Move each automatic bill, one at a time, and mark it off the list. Do not update ten billers in one afternoon and hope.
- Update any app or wallet that stored the old account number.
- Leave a cushion in the old account for a payment you forgot. That cushion is the whole method.
Before you close the old account
- Wait through at least one full cycle of your bills with no surprise charges on the old account.
- Make sure no check is still outstanding. A check you wrote last month can still clear.
- Transfer the remaining balance.
- Ask the bank to close the account and confirm the closure in writing. "I think I closed it" is not a closed account.
Seniors moving Social Security or a pension should treat the payer's own timeline as the schedule, not a generic "it takes a week." The seniors review set is where we group accounts with that use in mind.
Questions people ask
- When should I close the old bank account?
- After at least one full cycle of bills has hit the new account, no check is still outstanding, and you have moved every deposit. Closing earlier is how a payment bounces.
- Will my next paycheck go to the new account?
- Not automatically. Payroll and benefit payers often need a cycle or two. Ask them how long the change takes, and leave the old account open until a deposit actually arrives in the new one.
- What payments do people forget?
- Gym memberships, streaming, insurance, app stores, and anyone you pay by the account and routing number rather than by card.
- Is there a fee to close an account?
- Some banks charge one. It is on that bank's fee schedule. Look it up before you ask them to close the account.
